Overview of Services
The SOHP supports school-based care across Maine to increase the accessibility of foundational oral health services to students, helping every child build a strong foundation for lifelong oral health.
The program currently supports access to:
- Oral health screenings
- Fluoride varnish
- Silver diamine fluoride
- Dental sealants
- Oral health education
While some partner providers may offer additional services such as cleanings & restorative care, the SOHP’s current focus is to support the implementation of these core foundational services.
Delivery Options:


1. Assessing the Landscape

If your school is brand-new to school-based services , working with one of our Field Hygienists is a great way to get started so we can get a better understanding of your schools oral health needs!
In some areas, an SOHP Dental Hygienist can visit your school to provide screenings and fluoride varnish. Availability may be limited based on staff capacity and location. We’ll help assess the best option for your school based on availability and need.
If you’re a school nurse who’s interested in learning how to perform oral health services that are within your scope of practice, we also offering training to help you serve students.
2. Customized Care through our Trusted Partners

Many of the schools we work with partner with us through trusted partner organizations across the state.
Each in-school provider works a little differently, so we help match you based on your location and student needs. Our partners strive to make our basic preventive services available to students at no cost. Some may also offer minimally invasive care covered by the SOHP or more comprehensive care for students without a regular dental home.
